Gargle and Spit

When researchers tired out an experimental saliva test on 211 head and neck cancer patients and 527 people without cancer, the easy “swish- and- spit” check accurately ruled out cancer 82 percent of the time and found it 42 percent of the time, according to a study from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The test scans cells in saliva for molecules called methyl groups that latch onto DNA and raise cancer risk. Someday, the researchers say that, a similar quick, non-invasive test could be used to screen for cancers of the mo0uth, larynx, or pharynx in people at high risk, such as smokers and heavy drinkers.
